Adoptions

An adoption is the act of applying to the Probate Court for permanent placement of a child with a parent or parents other than the birth parents. Adoption involves the termination of parental responsibilities and rights of the biological parents and giving those responsibilities and rights to the adoptive parents.

The most common form of adoption is by a stepparent who assumes financial and legal responsibility for his or her spouse's children releasing the non-custodial parent from all parenting responsibilities.
